When is the Best Time to Open Your Backyard Swimming Pool?

Honeysuckle Nursery & Design Open Backyard Swimming Pool

It’s important to know when it’s best to open your backyard swimming pool to avoid extensive cleanup and enjoy it as much as possible.

If this is your first year with a backyard swimming pool, or you’re thinking of having one installed, one of the questions on your mind might be when the best time to open your backyard swimming pool is. It’s understandable if you’re itching to get into your pool this year—the sunny weather has a way of making us think about the water.

When?

It has been a surprisingly mild winter season. When it’s warm, it’s normal to think about the water. These beautiful, sunny days still aren’t quite warm enough for pool season, but if that’s the case, then when is the right time? Rather than do it based on a month, the best time to open your backyard swimming pool is when temperatures reach a consistent 70°F. We’re not there yet, but warmer temperatures could arrive earlier than usual this year.

Why?

Okay, so now you know that the best time to open your backyard swimming pool is when temperatures reach 70°F consistently. So, why is this the best time to do it?

Algae

Warm weather and sunlight promote algae growth, and that can be a big mess for you to clean up when it’s time to open your pool. Opening your pool once the temperature warms up consistently can help you circumvent this issue, and it means less mess to deal with when you do open your backyard swimming pool. Algae growth can be a significant problem for pools with mesh covers in particular, so an earlier opening is better.

Pollen

We have had a lot of pollen this winter, and it can get into your pool as well. It dyes the water yellow and can cause some significant buildup that you’ll have to deal with when it’s time to open. Once you get your pool up and running, your filter will be able to handle the pollen.

Cost

It’s common to assume that opening your backyard swimming pool early will actually cost you more, but that’s not usually the case. Especially for saltwater swimming pools, the cost to open up a bit earlier in the year will be nominal. In addition, you’ll save a lot of time on cleanup if your pool was well-sealed and you open it earlier in the year.
