The Physical and Mental Health Benefits of a Backyard Swimming Pool

Honeysuckle Nursery & Design Health Benefits Swimming Pool

There are extensive physical and mental health benefits of owning a backyard swimming pool.

Swimming is good for both the body and soul—this is a well-documented fact. We strive to get closer to water by going to the beach and visiting water parks, but one of the best ways is to bring water to you. A backyard swimming pool provides all of the benefits of swimming without the need to leave your property. Whenever you want to exercise or just relax in the water, your swimming pool is there.

Physical Benefits

It’s no secret that swimming is an excellent physical activity. It’s an aerobic exercise, and according to the CDC, two-and-a-half hours of aerobic exercise per week decreases the risk of chronic illness. Swimming offers a low-impact alternative to land-based aerobic exercise, such as running. Thanks to this, those with arthritis or other forms of joint and muscle pain are often more comfortable when swimming and can spend more time exercising in the water.

As an added benefit, especially for those with joint and muscle pain, you can do some land exercises in the water for a low-impact alternative. For example, if jumping jacks normally hurt your knees, you could do them in the water and enjoy a workout with less discomfort.

Mental Benefits

Physical exercise is a strong mood booster, no matter what form it takes. That said, humans seem to have a special connection with the water and the feeling of semi-weightlessness it provides. The freedom of movement and reduction of pressure on the body just seems to do us a lot of good. According to the CDC, swimming is proven to provide stress relief, ease anxiety, and improve a person’s overall mental state.

In fact, a case research study that was published in the National Library of Medicine was done on a 24-year-old woman with major depressive disorder and anxiety. After trying a variety of drugs and other non-drug treatments, such as talking therapy, she was encouraged to try open-water swimming as a form of treatment. A year later, she was still swimming multiple days a week and did not require medication to manage her symptoms.

A backyard swimming pool might not cure depression, but it will provide a mood lift whenever you need it, and it’s always available to you.
