Swimming Pool Safety Tips

Honeysuckle Nursery Swimming Pool Safety

Swimming pool safety should always be taken very seriously by every pool owner in order to protect everyone that hopes to enjoy your swimming pool.

Humans are drawn to the water, but sometimes it results in a loss of respect for what the water can do to us. Even in something as innocuous as a backyard swimming pool, there are dangers that need to be taken seriously by everyone that has access to the pool. Utilize some swimming pool safety tips to ensure that everyone has a good time and no one ever experiences unnecessary danger.

Pool Safety Starts With Better Products

A significant problem with swimming pool safety is that incidents often happen when no one expects them. For instance, if you have sent your child outside to play while you cook dinner or handle other household needs, turning your attention away even for just a few minutes could lead to disaster—a pool that is not properly secured could be accessed and the child may find themselves in danger.

Maintaining a secure swimming pool starts with a high-quality pool fence. A 4-sided isolation fence has the best protection against accidental access, and it can be strengthened with a gate that is self-closing and self-latching (inspect this regularly to ensure it is working as intended). Make sure the locking mechanism is out of reach of any children who have access to the area.

Another important product to have on any pool is anti-entrapment drain covers and safety release systems. This protects children, as well as pets and wildlife, from drain entrapment that could lead to drowning.

Ensure Everyone Knows How to Swim

One of the best ways to ensure the safety of anyone that hopes to enjoy your backyard swimming pool is to make sure they know how to swim. If you have children, teach them or take them to swimming lessons. Everyone that will be swimming in your backyard swimming pool should have a level of water competency that ensures they can swim safely without assistance.

Enforce Pool Rules

The Red Cross recommends some swimming pool safety rules that can help you ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone:

  • Never swim alone—always have a swim buddy present.
  • Never swim while intoxicated or otherwise mentally inhibited.
  • Avoid swimming near drains or any other areas that create suction.
  • Do not dive head-first unless in a pool with a safe area for diving.
  • Always have a swim watcher present.
  • Ensure your swim watcher is of clear mind and undistracted—no phone use, reading, or any activities that distract from watching the swimmers.
