Preparing Your Lawn for Spring

Green Lawn

Taking care of some maintenance tasks in the spring will make sure your lawn looks great during the summer!

The official start of spring is less than 3 weeks away! Soon the weather will start to get warmer and your flowerbeds will blossom. Now is the perfect time to begin planning your spring lawn maintenance. Spring is one of the most important times for your lawn because the tasks you do for it will help keep it looking green and healthy when the summer comes. Here are four tips to help you prepare your lawn for spring.

Removing Debris

Take the time to rake up and remove any debris from your lawn, including any matted areas that may hold snow mold. Raking these areas will allow air to flow more effectively through the turf, preventing disease and pest infestation, and promote easier growth of new grass.

Applying Crabgrass Control

It is very important to ensure you apply any crabgrass control products early in the spring before the temperature of the soil climbs to 60 degrees. At this point it will be too late – the seeds of the weeds will start to germinate and the weed killers will no longer work.

Fertilizing

Your lawn will need to build up nutrients after the dormant winter season in order to withstand the intense conditions of the summer. Fertilize early to ensure that your lawn is ready for the summer!

Aeration

Core aeration is a good idea for your lawn in the spring. This will allow air and water to reach the roots of your grass more quickly, promoting proper lawn growth and development. Take care not to have this done after the soil temperature reaches 55-60 degrees as this can lead to a more aggressive growth of weeds.
