Keep Your Outdoor Furniture Looking Great with These Care Tips

Outdoor Furniture

Use these tips to keep your outdoor furniture looking good for years to come.

Having great outdoor furniture is one of the keys to having a functional, beautiful outdoor space. We discussed last week how important it is to keep your patio hardscaping clean to enhance its beauty and keep it lasting a long time. It’s also important to care for your outdoor furniture – in fact, it’s just as important as caring for the furniture inside your home! The right care can keep your patio or deck looking just as beautiful in a few years as it did when you first made the purchase. Here are three care tips to use on your outdoor furniture this spring.

1. Cover When Not in Use

The weather and elements can really affect your furniture. Mitigating the effects of these elements, such as sun bleaching, pollen, and dirt, will help keep your furniture in usable condition. The best way to do this is to use a protective cover when you’re not using your patio. Many high-end furniture sets will come with covers included, but if yours doesn’t you may be able to order them from the manufacturer. And, if these aren’t available, a few tarps combined with clips should suffice!

2. Store During the Winter

Covers will work well during the majority of the year, but the wintertime (especially in the mid-Atlantic region) is notoriously brutal for outdoor furniture. Store your furniture during the winter in a shed or garage to protect it from the icy winds and snow.

3. Regular Cleaning

Much like your indoor furniture, dirt and grime can ruin a good set of outdoor furniture. But dirt is ever-abundant outside, so you’ll need to be very diligent in keeping to a regular cleaning schedule. Usually, taking a broom to your outdoor furniture and rinsing it with a garden hose (not a power washer) will do the trick. But if you need to use cleansers, stick to mild dish detergent and warm water.
