Which Decking Material is Better—Wood or Composite?

Decking Material

Read on for more info on the two main types of decking material available for your new deck installation project.

Choosing the right decking material is a big decision, and the two main decking materials to choose from are wood decking and composite decking. If you are mulling over your options and getting started with your decking project, here is what you need to know about the two main types of decking material.

Wood Decking

Wood decking is made from, you guessed it, natural wood planks or pressure-treated wood. Cedar is one of the most common decking options, as it is naturally resistant to insects, rotting, and the effects of moisture. While cedar decking is a beautiful option, it does require a decent amount of maintenance. You should plan on professionally pressure-washing and re-sealing your cedar deck at least once every two years, depending on how much wear and tear the surface gets.

Pressure-treated lumber is another wood decking option that is popular thanks to its rot and moisture-resistance. Decks that are made using pressure-treated lumber are known for lasting longer than those made from cedar, and they require less maintenance to boot. Either wood decking option typically lasts for 15-20, depending on how well you maintain it.

Composite Decking

Composite decking material is a combination of recycled plastic, bamboo fibers, wood chips, and/or sawdust. This mixture is formed into traditional planks and boards. Composite decking is the strongest decking material available on the market and only needs an occasional rinsing with your hose to remove dirt and debris from the surface. You can stain or paint your composite decking if you would like to.

Composite decking is also an eco-friendly option, as it is made from mostly recycled materials and sustainable substances. If you are concerned about your home’s impact on the environment, composite decking material is the best option for you. The main downside of composite decking is the increased cost. Composite decking material is the most expensive decking option, but the small amount of maintenance and increased durability helps to offset that.
