November Gardening Tasks

Honeysuckle Nursery & Design November Gardening

November is a great time to get in some important gardening before the first frost hits so your plants can overwinter and be ready for spring.

The temperature outside is getting lower, and many people are already beginning to make preparations for winter. For gardeners, this is a critical time to finish up some important tasks and make sure the garden is ready to overwinter and bounce back better than ever next spring.

Fallen Leaves

While many people recommend raking the leaves, we’ve previously discussed the benefits of leaving the leaves or at least gathering them in your garden area, where they will benefit wildlife and your garden’s soil when they break down and act as a natural mulch. At the very least, if you want a lawn and garden that is environmentally-friendly, we highly recommend you forego bagging or shredding your leaves, as this will take away important winter cover and nutrients from wildlife and your soil.

Weeds

Continue weeding your garden throughout the month of November, your garden will be better for it. As blooms pull back, the weeds around your garden will become more visible around this time, making it easier than ever for you to find and pull them. A properly weeded garden will have an easier time overwintering and will come back stronger next spring.

Water

You should continue watering your garden until the ground freezes—once that happens, the solid soil won’t absorb any water, and it will just be wasted. Watering through the fall will keep your plants and soil healthy, giving them an edge for the next growing season when it’s time for your plants to start blooming again. This is also important if you have fall and winter plants or shrubs in your garden, as they will still need to be well-cared for in order to produce vibrant, healthy blooms.

Plant Bulbs

In zone 7, it’s time to plant your spring bulbs. While perennials might bounce back next year, any annuals or biennials will not need to be replaced with new bulbs. This is also a good time to rearrange your garden if there are changes you’ve been wanting to make. Planting your spring bulbs now will give them a chance to root before the spring season hits, ensuring a healthy plant when the next growing season begins.
