3 Considerations to Make Before You Choose to Plant a New Tree

Drainage

Having a landscape that can flourish requires the right approach towards drainage. Here are a few methods this is achieved.

Designing the right landscape for your property means taking a number of factors in consideration, including managing one of the most essential resources for plant life to flourish—water. Puddling and flooding can ultimately cause damage not just to your landscape but to your home as well. An experienced landscape designer will know how to avoid these pitfalls and develop your landscape with these issues in mind. Below, we want to look at a few design elements that may go a long way in avoiding flooding or puddling and create an effective drainage solution.

Swales

A swale is a depression that follows the contour of a slope, whether natural or manmade. This then channels stormwater away from one place to another, helping filter runoff into designated areas. Creative planting also lets landscapers use plants that absorb much of that water. This, combined with fast-draining soil, helps prevent much of the drainage problems you’re otherwise likely to see. Designing your landscape around the integration of swales can help reroute water away from your home towards a particularly dry area of your property.

Rain Gardens

Rain gardens are shallow catch basins planted as flower beds which actually let water pool during a storm. However, that water slowly percolates into the soil. If we think of swales as a way of moving water, rain gardens are destinations and are intended to soak up as much of that water as possible. This promotes lush plant growth and helps all kinds of plants out there to flourish. When choosing a spot for a rain garden, look for spots that dry up quickly.

Proper Paving

The right kind of paving has small gaps that let water seep through into gravel beneath. This helps keep your paving dry, which is nice for parking or walking to your car, but it also eliminates runoff and helps with water management.
