3 Ways to Continue Landscaping During the Fall

In the fall, it’s easy to assume that you don’t have any landscaping or yard work tasks to do.

The air has turned crisp, even though summer still peeks through every few days. In the fall, it’s easy to assume that you don’t have any landscaping or yard work tasks to do. But beyond raking up leaves and deciding where to put your pumpkins, here are some other ways to landscape during the fall.

Mow the Lawn

Yes, mowing the lawn continues even as the weather cools down. That’s because the grass hasn’t stopped growing yet. Even when it gets cold, that won’t stop the grass from growing. If the grass is allowed to get too long, you could face a problem called snow mold, which happens when the grass is overloaded with snow while it is still too tall. If you can trim the grass to three inches, it will hold sunlight well enough to prevent snow mold growth.

Reseed the Lawn

You should also take some time to reseed the lawn. Before you can do this, though, you need to investigate how your lawn is doing – is it too parched from a hot summer? The condition of your lawn will determine how much seed you will need, but in general, a good rule of thumb is to use three pounds of seed or so for every 1,000 square feet of lawn that you have.

Prepare the Mulch

Mulch season starts again in the spring. But that doesn’t mean you can’t support your lawn with some mulch right now. A technique called turning the mulch will help make it fluffy enough to support the flowers that you still have growing in your gardens. If you want to add some fresh mulch, then don’t go higher than three inches; doing this can suffocate the plants you have, and expose them to diseases or insects that can hide in the mulch.
